Four sensors for the price of one
The main selling point of this sensor is undoubtedly its extensive functionality. Normally, you would need multiple sensors for this, but this small device combines everything into one: a motion detector (PIR + radar), a luminance sensor for measuring ambient brightness (in lux), and a thermo/hygro sensor for measuring temperature and humidity.

This combination is interesting for complex smart home automation. For example: “Switch on the light only when motion is detected and the light intensity is below 50 lux.” With this sensor, you only need one device for that.

Radar function: 10 GHz vs. 24GHz
Now it gets technical, but important. The sensor is advertised as a “mmWave radar”. This is justified, since there are even presence detectors that operate at “only” 5 GHz. However, the Tuya 4-in-1 sensor uses a frequency of 10.525 GHz. This is different from presence detectors such as the Tuya ZG-204ZM, which normally operate at 24 GHz.

What does this mean in practice? 10 GHz radar (also known as a microwave sensor) is excellent at detecting motion, even subtle movements. However, it is not accurate enough to identify a person solely based on their breathing if they are lying completely still (for example, sleeping in bed). A 24 GHz mmWave sensor can do that. Therefore, it is more accurate to describe it as a significantly improved motion detector, rather than a true presence detector. For most applications, such as “light on in the hallway” or “heating on in the bathroom”, this is more than sufficient.

Like many affordable Tuya devices, this is a Zigbee product. This means that a Zigbee gateway or hub is absolutely necessary for integration into your network and the use of the smart features. This can be an inexpensive Tuya hub, or for more advanced users, a universal solution such as Home Assistant with a Zigbee dongle.
